I cannot lie, I was beginning to get a little concerned here that these guys (well "guy", really) were going to flood us with album after album and lose all specialness they once had. Lo, was I wrong. This latest slayer has only two tracks, one over 20 minutes and one more than 16 minutes and interject plenty of mood and atmosphere to quickly quell any doubts about them, er, him. Hey, to me less is more, but it's okay if more is the good kind of more. This is really moody. I hate overusing words, but I mean it here. It doesn't get too fast, but it does pierece the skin slowly and painfully. Dodsferd can curse us with as many alubms as they damn well please, and use me as a sacrifical lamb if they'd so like! (FA)

Southern Lord Signs THE ACCUSED

Southern Lord Records is pleased to announce the signing of legendary Seattle splatter rock kings THE ACCUSED! Said label head Greg Anderson: "THE ACCUSED and guitarist Tommy Niemeyer were basically responsible for turning me onto hardcore/punk and underground metal. If it wasn't for me witnessing THE ACCUSED slay the audience -- and me -- in 1985 I may be writing this today!"

Added Niemeyer on joining the Southern Lord roster: "Because we are a pretty unclassifiable band, THE ACCUSED has had a rough time finding a label who really knows what this band is about; that our fans are all over the place demographically. Greg Anderson at Southern Lord is the guy who totally 'gets it' when it comes to THE ACCUSED. He knows exactly 'how metal' we are and 'how punk' we are and all the other weird shit in between that makes The Accused what it is: splatter rock. Hooking up with Anderson and the great staff of Southern Lord is the best thing that's happened with this band in a long time. The band will enter the studio with uber producer Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis, Brutal Truth, Cattle Decapitation, High On Fire etc) to record 14 new tunes. Appropriately titled The Curse Of Martha Splatterhead, the release will mark their first full-length studio effort in four years. The band will be making several live appearances in support of their new opus, including a freshly announced slot at SuperSonic Festival in Birmingham England July 25, 2009 alongside Corrupted and Thorr's Hammer. Mesmerizing black-doom monolith BROWN JENKINS have currently finished writing for their next (and final) album, Death Obsession. The album will be seven tracks and 40-plus minutes, and will also feature artwork by Dennis Dread (Darkthrone, Abscess, Phobia). Reports mainman UA, the music on Death Obsession is “much heavier/darker than Angel Eyes but also catchier, more intense. It combines some of the slowest stuff I've written so far with some of the most abstract/aggressive. The songwriting is also very different...much more technical, I guess. Just by perusing the booklet defunct Las Vegas thrash band Papsmear accompanies their retrospective MUSIC TO KILL BY with, you can tell these guys were at the forefront of their scene, as homemade flyers touting shared bills with the likes of COC, Pestilence, and Hirax can attest to. Armed with a feral thrash metal attack that always appeared to be on the brink of falling apart, this band who really never made it out of Vegas combines blistering speed, sneering vocals, whammy bar antics, and lyrical discourse taken straight from the playbook to comprise their style. This multi-faceted collection boasts live recordings, demos, and a DVD of the good old days when beer was cheap, girls were easy, and posers were soundly disposed of or at the very least according to the live shows heard here, resoundly heckled and harassed from the lead singer's microphone. This is the type of shit that just needs to stop, seriously. A new Stuck Mojo album? Who the fuck cares about a new Stuck Mojo album? I thought this was a joke at first, but no…it’s true. Stuck Mojo is clinging to the dream, folks. Stuck Mojo was synonymous with their vocalist Bonz, but he isn’t even the rapper for this band anymore. That’s almost like Dead Kennedys going on without Jello Biafra, or Iron Maiden going with Blaze Bailey as vocalist. It just doesn’t work. Stuck Mojo have had a new rapper/singer named Lord Nelson as their front man since 2006. It’s quite ridiculous when he sings the song, “15 Minutes of Fame,” because he wasn’t even in Stuck Mojo when the band briefly flirted with nu-metal success, thanks to touring with all those lame fucks who dominated the late ‘90’s-early 2000’s. To make this release even more laughable, almost every song on “The Great Revival” breaks into an awful chorus that is highly reminiscent of those harmonic pseudo-heavy rock bands with attractive female lead singers that were big about 5 years ago. I’m not saying that Lord Nelson sounds like a woman, but when he stops rapping and goes into singing the chorus, it sounds like something straight out of Lacuna Coil or Evanescence. It sounds like Stuck Mojo is trying to fit into the My Chemical Romance scene, but they fail miserably at it, because “The Great Revival” sounds outdated by popular culture standards. It’s a bit “too little, too late.” Stuck Mojo isn’t relevant anymore, and haven’t been for a long time. I honestly don’t think Stuck Mojo fans from back in the day would even care about this new album, especially since Bonz isn’t even in the band. I wish some bands out there, like Stuck Mojo, would learn this tragic hardship of rock n’ roll, and just go on and do different things rather than attempt to sound relevant and fail miserably at it under a familiar moniker. “The Great Revival” is an epic fail. Shame on you, “Stuck Mojo.” Shame on you. (Evil Matt)
